dc.description.abstract Arguments for or against the re-allocation of land in Australia's rangelands from one use to another are frequently short on dataand long on emotion. Although data presented in this paper are not sufficient to resolve these arguments, they do suggest some optionsfor closer examination.Starting from a model for calculating viability prospects for pastoralism in the rangelands, the paper examines theextent of grazing and the pastoral viability prospects for the areas devoted to each of the major land uses. Possibilities for changes in usein each of the states are also described.
