EUSTON YOUNG Mr. C. Euston Young was elected in 1955 as the first Fellow of the Australian Society of Animal Production in recognition of his valuable services to the pastoral industry. Until his retirement a few years ago, he was General Manager of the Australian Pastoral Company and, for many years, was an active member of the Advisory Committee of C.S.1.R and of many other organizations interested in rural affairs. He has been one of Australia's outstanding pioneers, not only in applying the results of research to the pastoral industry, but also in initiating and co-operating actively in the research. His father was one of the founders of the Australian Pastoral Company and after growing up on 'Noondoo', Dirranbandi, Queensland, Mr. Euston Young succeeded his father as General Manager of the Company and took over the management of 'Noondoo' itself in 1930. He was greatly interested in animal breeding and, early in the 1930's, was carrying out extensive fleece measurement work in the sheep stud on 'Noondoo'. He pioneered the application of the Mules operation, Mr. Mules himself having visited 'Noondoo' as early as 1932. The 'Noondoo ' cradle is a monument to Mr. Young 's work in 'mechanising' the Mules operation and advocating its use. Other improvements developed by him were the swinging table used for fleece sampling and a rotating box built into the race to hold sheep for breech examination. Many of the older members of C.S.I.R.O. and the Queensland Department of Agriculture can recall many instances of Mr. Young 's enthusiastic cooperation in their scientific investigations and of his generosity in providing animals, facilities, and his own time, as well as that of his staff, for field investigations. Mr. Euston Young has always been a great lover of the land and has a wide knowledge of its trees and birds; a trip with him through his beloved bush is a long-remembered joy. He believed in conserving its resources, and would never Adequate subdivision and watering facilities contributed to the overstock. success of his properties, as well as care of his stock and the application of modern breeding techniques. His sterling qualities were recognised by his staff who gave him deep affection and unswerving loyalty. 5
