FELLOWSHIP OF THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY O F ANIMAL PRODUCTION HELEN NEWTO N TURNE R Helen Newton Turner graduated Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from the University of Sydney in 1930. However she worked in the architectural field for only a very short time before joining the late Sir Ian (then Dr.) Clunies Ross as his Secretary and Assistant at the F. D. McMaster Animal Health Laboratory, C.S.I.R., Sydney. She remained with CSIR and CSIRO subsequently apart from three years during World War II when she was seconded first to the Department of Home Security and later to the Scientific Personnel Section of the Manpower Directorate. From the beginning of her career in CSIR, Miss Turner was interested in the application of statistics to biological research and for many years acted as a consulting statistician to her scientific colleagues in the Division of Animal Health and later the Division of Animal Health 8r Production. At the same time, inspired intially in part by Charle s Euston Young, the first Fellow of this Society, she developed her own work in animal breeding with particular reference to sheep and wool production. With the formation of the Division of Animal Genetics, Miss Turner, now Senior Principal Research Scientist, took charge of its Section of Animal Breeding. Miss Turner has made numerous original scientific contributions and established an international reputation in the application of genetics to improvement of production of sheep in terms of wool, meat and fertility. Equally important, she has managed to impart here enthusiasm and objective critical approach widely to producers and younger research and extension workers throughout Australia. Miss Turner was one of the inspiring forces behind the formation of the Society and acted as Secretary of the initial Steering Committee. She has been a vigorous and enthusiastic member throughout and held the office of President of the N.S.W. Branch in 1958-60 and Federal President in 1962-64. In 1963 as Federal President of the Society she led the Australian delegation to the first World Conference on Animal Production in Rome. For her contribution in the development and application of knowledge to the sheep and ~001 industry, for the enthusiasm and objective critical approach she has managed to impart to so many people, and for her work for the Society, Federal Council has much pleasure in electing HeIen Newton Turner a Fellow of the Australian Society of Animal Production. vii
